Chicago Black Restaurant Week: 2024

Chicago Black Restaurant Week has returned to Chicago this week. The annual event, founded by Memphis native and Chicago resident Lauran Smith, puts a stamp on a well known fact: Chicago is the comfort food capital of the world. So, what better way to show your inner foodie than embracing the essence of the local Black-owned restaurant scene?

Now through February 25 we will be savoring up culinary delights, uplifting local entrepreneurs, and celebrating the rich history behind these incredible establishments. Get ready for a mouthwatering two weeks filled with delicious dishes and feel-good vibes!

The idea came from my desire to celebrate my community, but in a way that made me feel like it was truly something that would provide a service as well!

MHS bold blends of healthy seasonings began in Vanessa’s kitchen. Her intentional passion for eating well goes beyond seasoning foods with basic salt and pepper. Being of Belize Caribbean descent, the MHS creation is built upon the shoulders of family matriarchs with culturally diverse cooking skills. She was taught the meaning behind flavoring foods with the most authentic seasonings and crafting her own blends. Vanessa took her learnings a step further. She created seasonings with ingredients that has proven health benefits and boldly sharing it with everyone.

Hailing from Chicago’s southside, Kimberly attended Whitney Young Magnet H.S. and then Northern Illinois University, majoring in Electrical Engineering. While an undergraduate, she played D1 basketball for the NIU Huskies and quickly developed a knack for getting people to remember her.

She delved into her entrepreneurial side, creating multiple side businesses outside of her engineering career in an attempt to find her niche. In 2012, Kimberly opened the doors to the company that would prove to be her catalyst into the world of successful entrepreneurship, KDM Engineering. Since then, she has been a part of many successful ventures and looks to continue that success with 1308 Chicago!

HAIRE’S GULF SHRIMP

Finnie Haire originally launched the locally famous shrimp shack in the early 1980s from a train caboose. The restaurant is currently located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on 75th and Vincennes. Haire’s mother, affectionately called “Big Mama” by family, passed the shrimp recipe down, according to Michael Haire Baldwin, nephew of Finnie Haire. Baldwin vividly recalls the afternoon, back in the ‘70s, when his grandmother called him and Haire into her kitchen to teach them how to make fried shrimp. The experience has since become a treasured family story. Haire’s Gulf Shrimp is a family business and a beloved part of the neighborhood.

It was this influence that inspired Chef Brian Jupiter to bring an authentic Southern experience to Chicago. This authenticity can be seen through the live music, signature New Orleans cuisine, custom packaged goods, and neighborhood feel on the corner of Beach and Wood in Wicker Park. We want you to eat and drink like they do in the South. Kitchen + Kocktails by Kevin Kelley is revolutionizing the way Americans enjoy elevated comfort food. Mr. Kevin Kelley, the owner, is a serial entrepreneur. Mr. Kevin Kelley was living abroad in Paris, France, after finding success as a litigation attorney in Dallas, Texas, at the Kelley Law Firm. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Kelley realized how much he missed the food that reminded him of home while overseas. Through this experience, he decided on his next endeavor: to open a beautifully designed, elevated comfort food dining room. From there, Kevin Kelley had a vision. Why don’t we have a restaurant in a prime location where we can feel good about ourselves, with great cocktails and soul food? Answering this question set him on a path to find a location to bring this idea to life. Unfortunately, in Dallas, no one with prime locations would lease a building to him for imprudent reasons. Kevin’s response was to buy the historic Hart building on Elm St. outright. This is how Kitchen + Kocktails by Kevin Kelley came to life in a prime location and historic landmark of Dallas, Texas. Kitchen + Kocktails was introduced to the Dallas restaurant market in May of 2020 during the pandemic.

Williams Inn Pizzeria started in 1969 as a family owned and operated business. Lulu Williams, a single mother of seven, created her own pizza dough recipe along with a secret sauce and sausage flavor combination. Williams Inn flourished on Chicago’s South Side in the community of Englewood for 30 years, until an unfortunate fire destroyed the building.
